The Leghorn chicken is the breed of choice for the egg industry. Female Leghorns used for egg-laying, known as layers, can produce over 300 eggs per year. Male Leghorns, however, cannot lay eggs and are culled by the industry when they are one day old. The methods used to dispose of the male Leghorn chicks are often inhumane.
